one year already?

Visit weekend just finished up, and luckily for me, I was not organizing it this year, meaning I got to enjoy the free food and subsidized activities while letting someone else do all the actual work of getting the food and figuring out what would make 90 or so prospectives happy and want to come to MIT.  Plus, the weather cooperated with us this year - it was pretty much all sun while the prospectives were here.  On the flip side, I was also battling a sore throat all weekend, plus it started snowing again once all the prospectives left, but hey, I’ll take good weekend weather when I can get it.

Visit weekend also means this blog is about one year old, and eight posts over 12 month is not a bad record for me, seeing how my previous blog once stayed untouched for three years.  Also scarily (excitedly?), I am only 2-3 months away from completing my Masters.  I just dropped off my proposal, and my parents have already gotten tickets to fly in for commencement, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I finish in time.  I am at a good point in my research though, and barring something crazy happening, I should be walking across Killian Court in June.

Aside from MIT-related things, I have also moved (again).  This time though, I am fairly sure that I will be living at this new place for the next five or so years, so I can finally get some nice stuff - the first thing on the list was a large HDTV.  Unfortunately, cable is not setup yet, so the HD part is wasted at the moment, and I will have to find somewhere else to watch the last episodes of BSG, but at least the TV looks nice (when it is off).

Also, my (former) roommate turned 25 last week, which according to her, means she is now “old”.  Another friend suggested that after your 3rd year, you start becoming an nth year student, so I had better get a move-on since I am only one more year from all these turning points.

A Response To This Entry:

Congrats on the thesis! Well, a future congrats I guess haha. At Illinois we can actually attend commencement in May even if we don’t deposit until the following August. But that just seems.. odd. I’m not sure if I will attend mine. I told my parents not to come, and I’ve heard psych people here don’t do it for their master’s since the PhD is technically the only one that matters. I think that’s sad :(

Ooh how many inches is the TV? It’s nice you feel settled in now. I’ve never felt like that here. I impulse-ordered an HDTV at one point, but was almost relieved when the deal fell through (price mistake boo) because I was worried about how I would transport it to the next place I ended up after I graduated. Talk about premature worrying :P

Are you really considered old for your department? Finishing a master’s in 2 years is fast by any standards, last time I checked. Maybe it’s different for engineering or something, but even to this day (and apparently unknowingly on the brink of becoming an nth year student), I am still the youngest person in my division. Lots worked a bit before returning to school *shrug.*

P.S. By content, I think this post belongs somewhere else too :)
