Leading MTL to Glory

Some grad students take the summers to do swanky internships. While at these internships, they are wined and dined by companies who want to eventually hire them full-time. I’ve been told that these grad students also make “money,” though I have no evidence to support this.

Then there are some graduate students who stick around MIT for the summer. It’s great! The labs are empty! I get more machine time! I’m able to do more work…! There are fun things going on around Boston and MIT for the summer though and I try to take advantage of them. Just last night, I led MTL to glory.

Sort of.

By “led” I mean that I was a participating member in a larger team. My precise role was a bit vague, though I think the most accurate title that I can bestow on myself is Maker of Snarky Comments. This position is much more important than, say, Captain.

By “MTL” I mean the Microsystem Technology Lab’s intramural summer softball team. We’re The Piranhas. Yes, we’re nerds. Yes, we have t-shirts with scary-looking fish on them.

And by “glory” I mean that we blew our come-from-behind lead in the final inning to lose by 1. Such are the ways of The Piranhas.

Not to take this too seriously, but our usual centerfielder was out of town and had to miss the game. It left our outfield a bit unanchored and there was some confusion during some plays. So if anyone on the admissions committee is reading this, if you guys come across an application of a student in the semiconductor field and it looks like he has some softball experience, please accept him. We could use a back-up centerfielder. And while we’re at it, our first baseman just successfully defended his PhD, so keep your eyes out for a tall lefty to replace him.

Can you take a picture of the Piranha’s T-shirt and post it on your blog?
