In Denial

The temperature is changing here in Boston. Just yesterday, I woke up and found my Firefox telling me it was 37 degrees out.

“37 degrees?” I thought. “That’s not cold, right? That’s still above freezing!”

This is what summer in Boston does to you. Summer makes you forget what 37 degrees feels like.

So here’s my plan. If I simply ignore the fact that it’s getting cold, and dress only in a light jacket, then it won’t be cold. Foolproof, yeah?

In partial seriousness, it’s a dilemma. If I start wearing my winter jacket on October 20th, then I’m going to be really sick of it come February. Don’t get me wrong: I love my winter jacket. It’s warm and long and has big, fun buttons on it. But staring down 5 months of winter having to wear that coat is like staring down a take-home week long final exam (open note, open book, open library, open Google - we knew it was going to be awful).

But after a cup of coffee yesterday morning, my rational side kicked in. I could go out wearing only a fleece, refusing to believe that winter is starting its march to Boston. Or I could be smart about it, bundle up, and be happy there’s not yet ice on the sidewalks.

I made a compromise: winter jacket, but no hat or gloves. I’m still partly in denial about winter.

(Cue the comments from my father, telling me to wear a hat and gloves. And to eat my vegetables.)
